Blood Shadows by Lindsay J Pryor. Book One in the Blackthorn Series
I have recently been reading The Blackthorn Series by Lindsay J Pryor. I just love her work and hope that by reading these reviews, others will come to enjoy Blackthorn as much as I have!
Length: 382 pages Published: 20 November 2012
For vengeance – would you trust a vampire?
For justice – could you betray your family?
For love – are you ready to question everything you believe in?
Gifted with the ability to read the shadows of ‘third species’ beings, Caitlin Parish is the Vampire Control Unit’s most powerful agent. Despite that, her mission to hunt down Kane Malloy – a master vampire – comes with a death wish. Many have tried, but few have survived.
For Caitlin, tracking Kane is about more than just professional reputation. With her parents both mysteriously killed 7 years apart to the day, Caitlin knows that without Kane’s help she is next.
She has four days to make a deal with the wicked, the irresistible, the treacherous Kane Malloy. The vampire who despises everything she stands for.
I’d advise a reading age of 17+
Review – ***SPOILERS!!***
The first thing that struck me about this book is how original it is. This is not your typical vampire book!
Caitlin Parish has a huge problem, a ‘fourth species’ demon is coming for her soul and the only person who can help her is a super sexy master vampire. Kane Malloy. A vampire of which is accused of horrific crimes.
But what Caitlin doesn’t realise is that Kane has his own plans for her, plans that will get him his revenge.
This book is intense. There isn’t a dull moment! You could cut the sexual tension with a knife.
I love how Caitlin and Kane start off completely untrusting of one another, each out only for what they can get. But after time spent together they begin to let their walls down and start developing feelings for one another. But what I love most about the dynamic of their relationship, is how they try to fight their feelings, how even when they accept them, they still don’t want to.
Throughout the story Caitlin comes across many things standing in the way of saving her life, and each time I kept thinking, this is it, there is nothing else she can do, but not once does Caitlin even think to give up, she is an inspiring character.
Kane is a character that still even now I find hard to describe, he isn’t your typical book boyfriend that’s for sure! I spent the entire book sneaking a couple of pages ahead because I found myself wanting to know what his reactions to situations would be. Particularly when Caitlin manages to sneak out and lock him in! I find him intriguing and certainly want to read more of him.
This is not your typical love story, neither is it your typical happy ending.
All in all I loved this book and will definitely be going on to read Blood Roses. Well done Lindsay J Pryor.
